Who are we?

GL Middlemass Knitwear is a family business located in Hawick in the Scottish Borders.

Made up of father Gary and son Greig, the pair have almost 50 years worth of experience in the knitwear industry. Gary spent 18 years at Pringles of Scotland, then had a stint at Johnstons of Elgin before moving to William Lockies where he has been for the last 18 years. Meanwhile Greig spent eight years at Hawico before moving to join his dad at William Lockies two years ago.

What makes us different?

There are many cashmere glove manufacturers out there, but not only are we a father and son business, we also manufacture our gloves in our hometown of Hawick. In the 1800's Hawick was at the very heart of the knitwear trade in Scotland, and the scale of the textile industry in Hawick grew to such a size, that by 1870 over a million pounds in weight of wool was being turned each year into a range of goods. With the growth of the industry came an influx of workers and Hawick’s population peaked at 19,800 in 1891, when it is worth remembering the area of the town was a fraction of its present size.
